Marva R. Horsey, Treasurer and Membership/Scholarship Director

Marva has attended the Family Reunions for more than 40 years. She has worked in the capacity of Membership/Scholarship Director for the last 10 + years. In 2019 Marva assumed the role of Treasurer after the passing of the long-time Treasurer (I. Olivia Lindsay) and more recently was ran unopposed in our 2022 election. To further the growth of our family membership, Marva requested an early mailing of the membership form and encourages family members and friends to remain active. She reaches out to our seniors (people over 80) to remind them about the annual membership and to check on their well-being. She approves the scholarship applications along with the president.

Marva is a doctoral candidate (PhD. (c), who has completed all coursework and examinations and is working on the completion of her dissertation (ABD-all but dissertation). She has two Master’s Degrees in Human Services and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management.

Marva has worked in a plethora of non-profit organizations designed to empower people to help themselves and become self-sufficient. She has worked as a teacher in public schools and an instructor in a college and ultimately became the Dean there. She has worked with the New York City Administration for Children’s Services; HIV/AIDS Services Administration (HASA) helping those living with this dreaded disease and meeting their special needs.

Currently, and for nearly 30 years, Marva has attended her church in Harlem and was called by God to be a Deacon. She is the President of the Seasoned Saints Ministry (Seniors) and President of the Bereavement Ministry. Marva is currently in training to become a Community Chaplain and serves in several other ministries as well. Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Marva’s lineage on the Martin side of the family comes from her grandfather (Maynard Hogan)and her Leverett lineage comes from her grandmother (Katie Reid-Hogan).
